Every Kindle device keeps a local file called "My Clippings.txt" that contains all your highlights, notes, and bookmarks. Here is how to get it.
From a Kindle e-reader (recommended):
1. Connect your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable that came with it.
2. Your Kindle will appear as a drive or folder on your computer (like a USB flash drive).
3. Open the Kindle drive. Inside you will see several folders.
4. Find the file called "My Clippings.txt" — it is usually in the "documents" folder or the root of the Kindle drive.
5. Copy the file to your desktop or downloads folder.
6. Safely eject your Kindle and disconnect the USB cable.
7. Upload "My Clippings.txt" to the Kindle Highlights → Markdown tool.
What the file contains:
- Every highlight you have made on any book or document on that Kindle
- Any notes you typed
- Your location and date for each clip
- The book title and author for each clip
What it does NOT contain:
- Highlights you made on the Kindle app on your phone or tablet (those sync to Amazon's servers separately, not to this file)
- Highlights from borrowed library books (Kindle removes them when the loan expires)
From Kindle for Mac/PC app:
The desktop app does not expose a "My Clippings.txt" file. For Kindle app highlights, you would need to use Amazon's website: go to read.amazon.com/notebook to see your highlights, but there is no bulk export from there currently.
From the Kindle app (iPhone/Android):
The mobile app also does not expose a clippings file. The "My Clippings.txt" approach only works with a physical Kindle device connected via USB.
