Evernote lets you export your notes in the .enex format (Evernote XML). This is the format required by the Evernote → Markdown tool. Here is how to export.
From Evernote for Mac or Windows (desktop app):
Export one notebook at a time:
1. Open the Evernote desktop app.
2. In the left sidebar, right-click on the notebook you want to export.
3. Click "Export Notes from [Notebook Name]..."
4. Choose "Evernote XML Format (.enex)" as the format.
5. Check "Include Tags" so your tags are preserved in the export.
6. Click "Save" and choose where to save the .enex file.
Export all notebooks:
1. In Evernote, click "Notes" in the left sidebar to see all notes across all notebooks.
2. Press Ctrl+A (Windows) or Cmd+A (Mac) to select all notes.
3. Right-click → "Export Notes..."
4. Choose ".enex" format.
5. Save the file — this will be a single large .enex containing all your notes.
From Evernote Web (browser):
The web version does not support .enex export. You must use the desktop app.
Note on stacks:
Evernote "stacks" (groups of notebooks) must be exported notebook by notebook — there is no single-click export for an entire stack. If you have many notebooks, export each one separately and upload them to the tool one at a time, or upload all at once and the tool will combine them.
What is included in the .enex export:
- Note title, creation date, update date
- Note body (formatted text, images as attachments, tables, checklists)
- Tags
- Source URL (if you clipped the note from the web)
What is NOT included:
- Shared notes from other users' notebooks
- Notes in the Trash (not exported by default)
